Agri-Cation CIC
Case Study: Agri-Cation CIC – Education for All
Agri-Cation CIC, established in February 2020, is an educational charity committed to using nature, farming, and the outdoors to teach people about food production, essential life skills, and the environment. Originally set up to address the significant disconnect between urban and rural lifestyles, Agri-Cation CIC began by organising school visits to bridge this gap. Over time, the organisation expanded its mission, using animals and farming to help individuals build vital employability skills. This approach has been especially effective in supporting disabled people, providing development opportunities and access to a farming environment. Agri-Cation CIC also works with unemployed individuals, helping them build confidence and develop the skills needed to re-enter the workforce.
A key focus is educating children about where their food really comes from. Many urban children are only familiar with food as seen in supermarkets, often unaware of its origins. Agri-Cation CIC aims to help them understand the challenges involved in food production, fostering a greater appreciation of the food we consume.
The charity’s work is grounded in agricultural knowledge transfer, using open-minded support and active listening to break down barriers and empower individuals. Inclusivity is at the heart of its mission. Thanks to a £5,000 grant from the Delamere Dairy Foundation, Agri-Cation CIC was able to install a disabled toilet facility, enabling the charity to expand its outreach and collaborate with organisations such as First Choice Housing Association, Derwen College, Smallbrook School, and Reaseheath College. These partnerships support individuals with additional learning needs (ALN) and disabilities, providing them with valuable opportunities to engage with agriculture.
Agri-Cation CIC now offers “farm fun days” for carers supporting individuals in wheelchairs through First Choice Housing Association. Participants visit the calf-rearing facility, where they learn how beef animals are cared for and, when possible, assist with feeding. A wheelchair-accessible growing area allows participants to plant and harvest crops, and an outdoor classroom offers hands-on interaction with chickens and goats—a highlight of these visits.
In addition to these special projects, Agri-Cation CIC continues its broader community engagement through the “Grow Together” and “Wellie-Being” projects on their family farm in Bangor-on-Dee, Wrexham. These initiatives focus on food production, environmental sustainability, and climate change, engaging over 500 volunteers and school groups. The funding from the Delamere Dairy Foundation has been vital in enabling the charity to reach more people and work more inclusively, extending opportunities to individuals from all backgrounds.
