LET’S FARM – CASE STUDY

Let’s Farm, located in the serene countryside of Winsford, Cheshire, is more than just a working farm; it’s a thriving hub of inclusivity, education, and community engagement. The Delamere Dairy Foundation’s grant was instrumental in supporting the purchase of a commercial polytunnel, a crucial step in the farm’s journey to unlock its full potential. This new addition is paving the way for an innovative project set to begin in the spring, teaching young people with learning disabilities how to grow their own food and develop transferable horticultural skills to enhance their independence and quality of life.

At the heart of Let’s Farm’s mission is a commitment to empowering individuals with diverse abilities. By providing a safe yet dynamic environment, the farm offers participants, known as Rangers, the chance to take part in a variety of activities aligned with the farming calendar. From lambing and small animal care to using an incubator to hatch eggs and maintaining animal health, Rangers gain hands-on experience while building confidence and fostering a sense of belonging.

The impact of Let’s Farm extends beyond the boundaries of the farm itself. Rangers contribute to community-focused initiatives such as maintaining the grounds of St. Chads Church, planting bulbs, pruning, and leaf blowing, as well as conducting regular litter picks in the Winsford area. These efforts not only enhance the local environment but also instil a sense of pride and responsibility in the participants.

The addition of the polytunnel marks a significant milestone for Let’s Farm. This new facility will provide an inclusive space for Rangers to learn and practice horticultural skills, enabling them to grow fresh produce and explore sustainable living practices. This project not only enhances the educational opportunities available at the farm but also promotes mental well-being through therapeutic interaction with nature.

Families have seen first-hand the profound difference Let’s Farm makes. Cathy, the mother of one of the Rangers, shared, “Our daughter absolutely loves Let’s Farm. She is buzzing with excitement after every visit. She enjoys working with animals, craft activities, cooking, and most importantly, socialising with her fellow Rangers. The supportive environment and dedicated staff encourage independence and confidence, which is wonderful to witness.”

Let’s Farm’s holistic approach also includes conservation and environmental programmes, such as maintaining woodland and wetland areas, harvesting the orchard, and exploring sustainable arts and crafts. By combining farming with mindfulness, Let’s Farm provides a well-rounded experience that nurtures both practical skills and emotional growth.

Thanks to the support of the Delamere Dairy Foundation, Let’s Farm is on track to achieve its vision of creating an inclusive community where individuals with learning disabilities can thrive. The new polytunnel project promises to leave a lasting legacy, equipping participants with valuable skills and opportunities that will benefit them for years to come.
