MAD Swansea
Swansea MAD – Case Study
Swansea MAD, a grassroots anti-poverty youth and community charity based in Swansea, has been dedicated to creating a fairer world where people can thrive and be themselves since its founding in 2009. The charity was established to address systemic inequality and poverty by offering inclusive, safe spaces where individuals can access services, projects, and support that have a meaningful impact on their lives. Swansea MAD works to foster fairness, belonging, and positive change within the community.
Located on Swansea High Street, Swansea MAD operates as a Warm Welcome Hub, providing essential resources and support to the local community. Thanks to funding from the Delamere Foundation, the charity has been able to enhance its efforts, offering meals, recipes, and food resources to young people. The funding has also supported access to toiletries, period products, clothes, SIM cards, data, devices, workshops, and one-to-one support. This safe space serves as a cornerstone for young people, where they can engage in digital training, music, and creative arts, and participate in shaping the charity’s policies, such as the Sustainable Food Policy.
At its core, Swansea MAD aims to prevent poverty, advance social justice, and address systemic barriers that marginalise communities. The charity’s objectives include empowering young people and communities through education and training, promoting equality and diversity, and embedding environmental sustainability into its mission. Recreational and skill-building activities are central to its approach, fostering social inclusion and improving life opportunities.
The funding from the Delamere Dairy Foundation has significantly bolstered Swansea MAD’s ability to support young people. It has enabled the charity to provide additional workshops, events, and creative opportunities. For example, young participants have taken part in jamming sessions and contributed to Wales Climate Week, where they shared their ideas on climate change and environmental issues. These activities have not only increased their confidence and well-being but have also given them a platform to express their concerns and priorities.
One young person, in particular, found a renewed sense of purpose through
Swansea MAD’s programmes. They started attending workshops and one-to-one sessions at Swansea MAD, developing their passion for music. With encouragement from the staff and peers, their confidence blossomed, and they began sharing their music at community events. This transformation has inspired others within the group, demonstrating the profound impact of providing a nurturing, inclusive environment.
Swansea MAD’s work is a testament to the power of community-focused initiatives in creating meaningful change. By addressing immediate needs and empowering young people to take an active role in their futures, the charity continues to build a stronger, more inclusive Swansea.
